Chicago-O'Hare So I'm buying for Rupert?

Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 10:18:09 AM PDT

So... what's up with the only available bar at O'Hare being the FOX/Skybox theme park?

Flying out on Tuesday, I had an enjoyable chat with a charming couple of folks from Rockford and Minneapolis who felt the same way.  The only screens on view were FOX News and FOX Sports a-go-go, and we wondered whether the channel could be changed... but had little time, and didn't want to bug the besieged and hard-working barkeeps.

While I wasn't there for Yearly Kos, I was wondering whether any others felt the same dismay at supporting the enemy via only wanting a cold Sam Adams.

So... any thoughts on a world airport being effectively occupied by FOX scum?  It gave me pause... especially after the awe and love for America that I felt in Chicago.  That feeling came from going weak before the mighty towers of capitalism... just next to the gorgeous green parks and public facilities given in return... such a short walk from the Hancock observatory to kids splashing in the fountains of Millenium Park, surrounded by art and beauty...

And saying, lo, this is a city built and maintained by Democrats, machine/corrupt or no, this is what it should be.

I just kinda hated the sneering spectre of Bill O'Reilly on the stool next to me. Know what I mean?

I went through Charlotte, and the nicest restaurant in my terminal was a Fox Sports bar. I sucked it up and went to the next terminal so I wouldn't be tempted to give Rupert any of my money.

I recently had a similar problem with my bank - that's Wells Fargo - and on a couple of occasions I complained to the teller that I really didn't want to see Fox news on their TV.  Something else, please.  Well, on the second or third time or whatever, the teller said, "Wow, you're not the first one to complain about this today."  She then directly made arrangements for the channel to be changed and since then I've never seen Fox there again.  A friend of mine had a similar experience at Bank of the West.  So I say complain, it really works.

We asked about changing the staion, were told the bank president wanted it taht way. We wrote to him and got sort of a rude letter. I followed up with some statistic from Media Matters. Now we will change banks and write a letter to the editor about why. We have to word it carefully so it is not a 'hit piece' on the bank as our paper will probably not print such a letter about a leading business in our community. I will post the letter in a comment somewhere onDK when I write it. We just must remain vigilant about this. Ask to have the channel changed EACH time we encounter it! MOst people will not take the trouble to do that, so we CAN make a difference.

The only reason Fox could possibly have so many viewers is because we're forced to watch that crap in trapped conditions like airports, dealerships, hotel lobbies, etc.  Remember when you could go someplace and if someone asked for them to turn on the news, CNN would usually be put on?  Now it's, "We can't change the channel." bullshit.

... Airport Retail News (which is the most recent I have) there are two main concession contractors at O'Hare: Host Marriott Services (a national company) and Airport Retail Management. (Since these contracts are generally long-term, the info is probably still relevant.) These contractors, in turn, sublet portions of their total concession area to franchises.

I don't know if these phone numbers are still current but I'll give them to youfor what it's worth. You can call the contract managers and complain:

    Host Marriott (773) 686-6124
    Airport Retail Management (773) 894-3900

Hoist one for me. I'm stuck at work. :-)
